Hair Loss - What is Excessive and How Do You Stop It?
What qualifies hair loss as excessive? Everyone looses hair. The shedding of hair is a normal process; it is when one looses more than 10% of their hair at one time that the loss is considered excessive. There are many causes of hair loss as well as many ways to prevent, or slow the process. It is usually the temporary losses we can control ourselves, needing to rely on a physician to help control hair loss that many be permanent.
One of the most common causes of hair loss is poor diet. It is of utmost importance that you promote good hair health. Adding such foods as green vegetables, fish, egg yolks, citrus and carrots will provide a great Vitamin A source along with vitamin E. Vitamin A is a health promoting anti-oxidant and Vitamin C promotes good blood circulation, reducing hair loss.
Stress is a very common factor in hair loss. Stress is not just worry. Stress can be caused by illness, surgery, even medication. Most hair loss that is the result of this type of stress is considered a temporary hair loss. You may not notice that you are loosing your hair for 2-3 months after the illness or the surgery. Medications such as chemotherapy, blood thinners, even antidepressants and birth control pills can cause you to loose your hair. The hair loss will stop when you are no longer taking the medication and your hair will return.
It is not uncommon for a woman to experience hair loss after childbirth. This is due to high hormone levels and the hair will return to normal after the woman's hormones have returned to normal levels. However, if the hormone imbalance is caused by thyroid imbalances, it will be necessary to have a physician monitor treatment of the thyroid in order to return hormone levels to normal.
Menopause is a very common cause of hair loss in women because of the changes in hormone production. Your physician can make suggestion which will help control your hair loss; sometimes a simple increase in exercise or meditation practices can decrease hair loss. A common and often overlooked cause of hair loss is poor hair care or excessive use of chemicals. The excessive use of hair care products such as gels and sprays causes the product load up on your hair and cause breakage as well as clogging the pores of the scalp. Tight braiding, constant pulling back into tight ponytails can also cause breakage and hair loss.
To help control hair loss, it is a good idea to schedule hair cleaning every other day, rather than daily as your hair needs oil. Daily washing removes all oil and can cause dryness and breakage. When ever possible, let your hair dry naturally. Excessive heat can cause breakage and hair loss. Avoid curling utensils that will pull and break the hair. Shampoos are formulated for hair types. Learn your hair type and by the appropriate shampoo. Clean your combs and brushes regularly.
