Hair loss through thyroid

Hair loss can occur through different medical conditions. One way hair loss can occur is through a thyroid imbalance. The thyroid gland, located in the neck, helps regulate metabolism. An underactive thyroid gland (a condition called hypothyroidism) and an overactive thyroid gland (a condition called hyperthyroidism) can both cause hair loss. If hair loss occurs because of a thyroid problem, there can be other symptoms besides the hair loss. Fatigue, senstivity to cold, brittle nails, and dry skin can all be symptoms of a thyroid problem. Add hair loss to those symptoms, and you might have a thyroid problem. A physician can confirm a thyroid problem with a simple blood test.

Hair loss through a thyroid condition can be distressing. If your doctor believes you have a thyroid imbalance, they can treat your underactive thyroid with medication. Your doctor will most likely test and retest your thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) level until it falls within the normal ranges. But in the meantime, you're left with distressing hair loss. There are many natural remedies available to combat hair loss because of a thyroid condition, besides medications available at the pharmacy.

One natural remedy for hair loss through a thyroid imbalance is to take an evening primrose oil supplement. Read the dosage on the bottle before taking this supplement, or ask the pharmacist to verify the correct dose. Another more drastic remedy is a hair transplant, or hair plugs, to restore hair growth due to the thyroid problem. Hair is removed from the back or sides of the scalp and transplanted to the areas of hair thinning. Whether or not you decide to go a drastic route to replace your hair, keep in mind it takes hair 3 to 6 months to regrow. If after your TSH level is regulated, and you still see hair loss and not regrowth, consult a dermatologist.
