Hair Replacement
There are a few options to hair replacement. There are medications and topical creams that stop hair loss and might even cause new hair to grow. There is the oldest hair replacement aide available, the wig. The Wigs today are undetectable and extremely natural looking. Lastly there are surgical procedures.
New technology has really allowed the wig industry to improve. Besides getting a wig or toupee to cover hair loss we now have available techniques that actually attach the new hair to a persons existing hair. These are all dependent on the hair already on the head so they must be adjusted or tightened as the hair grows. This would include weaves, fusing, and bonding.
Two of the most popular hair replacement/restoration products are Minoxidil (Rogaine) and Propecia. Minoxidil is applied to the scalp. Propecia is a pill that acts on the response of the hair follicles to androgenic hormones. This is not available to women and only by prescription. Finasteride is another pill available only by prescription. Dutasteride is a newer oral medication that is in clinical trials and has been approved in Europe.
Hair transplant surgery is the most common treatment for hair loss. Hair replacement surgery is basically taking hair from the back and side of the head (the fringe) and moving it to the top. Candidates must have enough hair in the fringe area for this to work. The side effects of this surgery are naturally pain and swelling. The swelling could involve the face. There is formation of scabs on the sites that received the grafts which heal in a week to ten days. Infection and excessive bleeding are very rare complications.
A new concept that is gaining in popularity also is a combination approach of medical and surgical hair replacement. Medical therapy can be used to slow hair loss first, especially in younger men, and a specialist in hair restoration can determine over the next several years the severity of the hair loss. They can also establish a plan with the patient step by step as surgery done to young may not remain effective as a man loses more hair as he gets older. Medical therapy can also be used after surgery to make the areas fuller.
