Hair Loss Therapy:. Healthy nutrition

Hair loss is a natural occurence. Every day we lose an average of 50 to 100 hairs. But excessive hair loss is often distressing, and many people look to a medication or pill or cream to solve their hair loss problem. Sometimes hair loss is caused by stress. But one cause of hair loss can be remedied with a non-medical solution: healthy nutrition. This form of hair loss therapy can happen when you take a look at the kinds of foods you eat.

Most diets are made up of some mixture of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. When diets become unbalanced in these areas, hair loss can occur. A healthy, nutritious diet's calorie content should contain at least 15% protein. Protein can come from lean meat, eggs, fish or chicken, dairy products, and nuts. Also, eating good carbohydrates can balance our diets. Many diets today contain processed foods, which strip many essential nutrients from the food.

If your diet lacks certain elements like vitamin A, iodine, and iron, this can cause hair loss. An extreme example is individuals with eating disorders such as bulimia. Many people don't have that disorder, but just correcting your diet and maintaining healthy nutrition will cause hair growth to return. In fact, a National Institute of Health study points to a lack of iron in a diet as a contributor to hair loss. Eating a few more foods rich in iron can help restore an imbalanced diet to a balanced one. Iron-rich foods include chicken or beef liver, sardines, tuna, leafy greens such as collard greens or spinach, and even dried apricots, prunes, and raisins. One cup of navy or black beans, for example, contains almost as much iron as a serving of cooked turkey meat.

Healthy nutrition can be an excellent therapy for hair loss. In this case, you are what you eat, and your hair is what you eat too.
